We offer OCR GCSE in Leisure & Tourism – single award.

The main aims of the course are:
1.    Insight into business, retail and distribution, hospitality, catering
2.    Develop as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds
3.    Understand the nature of the leisure and tourism industry
4.    Develop an awareness of health and safety issues
5.    Develop an understanding of sustainable development and environmental issues
6.    Understand how L&T contributes to society and the economy
7.    Provide an insight into further learning opportunities and career choices

Course overview

Unit 1 (B181): Understanding the leisure and tourism industries
–    40% of course
–    1.5 hrs written paper covering four questions about content taught
–    80 marks available
–    Externally assessed

Unit 2 (B182): Moving forward in leisure and tourism
–    60% of course
–    Controlled Assessment based on investigating a local leisure and tourism facility e.g. a visitor attraction
–    40 marks available
–    Internally assessed and externally moderated

Content taught for Unit 1 includes:
–    Different types of leisure and tourism organisations
–    Employment opportunities in the L&T industry
–    How L&T organisations operate as a business
–    Health and safety issues
–    Transportation options
–    Different customer groups
–    National and international visitor destinations
–    Factors that have influenced development within the L&T industry
–    Sustainability and the impact of developments on the local environment and cultures

Tasks to complete for Unit 2 include:
–    Choose a local L&T facility to investigate
–    Identify the customer base of the facility
–    Identify the products and services offered to its customers
–    Offer suggestions for future developments of the facility
–    Produce a piece of promotional material for the facility

Course overview

Syllabus: Eight modules are covered over a two year period.  These are:
•    Working as a team in L&T
•    Investigating L&T provision in the local area
•    Introducing skills for working in L&T
•    Investigating options for work in L&T
•    Communicating skills in L&T
•    UK visitor destinations
•    Promotion for Travel and Tourism
•    Looking after customers in Travel and Tourism

There is no external exam as students aim to create portfolios of work that are internally assessed and then externally moderated.  Success in these eight modules is equivalent to 2 GCSE’s (D-G).
